Cyber safety at tax time

September 13, 2018

Tax time is a prime time for cybercriminals. Chamber members should remain vigilant!

Cybercriminals can use stolen information such as your AUSkey to commit tax fraud in your name or your business’ name.

Here are some tips to help our members stay one step ahead and keep safe online:

  • Keep your business information safe including your AUSkey.

  • Remove system access from past employees.

  • Keep your computer and device software up to date by installing the latest security updates and run regular anti-virus scans.

  • Monitor your accounts for suspicious activity. If you notice transactions you didn't make or interactions you didn't have, contact the organisation directly.

  • Be smart with social media; scammers could use information from these platforms to impersonate you and contact your clients requesting information or money.

  • Beware of anyone asking you to ‘confirm’ your details, purchase a service, update registrations, process your activity statement or refund or pay invoices.

If you have been a victim of cybercrime such as fraud, you can report a cybercrime to the Australian Cybercrime Online Reporting Network (ACORN).
